What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-colored custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surface of your natural teeth. Veneers change the color, shape, size and/or length of the teeth. They generally last at least 10 years.

Why Veneers Are Needed

Several conditions or problems may suggest the use of veneers. You may want to consider veneers when your smile shows teeth that are:

  • Stained or discolored
  • Chipped or broken
  • Decayed or worn down
  • Moderately misaligned or crooked
  • Unevenly spaced or have gaps
  • Smaller or larger than adjacent teeth

The Procedure

First, we make impressions of your teeth. Temporary veneers may be placed to protect teeth while your custom veneers are being made. A dental technician, working in a dental lab, handcrafts veneers from a model provided by your dentist. Veneers can be applied to one or more teeth at the same time. Once your veneers are permanently placed on your teeth, you cannot reverse the process, because a small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth in order to accommodate the porcelain shell. While veneers are stain resistant, you may be advised to avoid dark-colored food and beverages — especially coffee, tea and red wine — to prevent discoloring your new porcelain veneers.

Our Recommendation

Veneers are an easy way to improve your appearance, and they look and feel perfectly natural. Veneers don’t require the extensive tooth shaping procedure that crowns do, yet they offer a strong, aesthetically pleasing alternative.
